Two great new news today about the ongoing battle between social networks and politics. Both Twitch and Reddit took steps against political content, citing violations of the terms of service.

Twitch confirmed today that it has temporarily suspended the president’s account. “Hateful behavior on Twitch is unacceptable,” said TechCrunch spokesman for the streaming giant. “In accordance with our policy, President Trump’s channel has been suspended from Twitch for comments made live, and copyright infringing content has been removed.”

Twitch, in particular, cites two incidents from pre-election rallies that Trump uttered at rallies with an interval of four years. The first comes from his campaign, including now the infamous words:

When Mexico sends its people, they do not send its best. They do not send you. They do not send you. They send people who have a lot of problems, and they bring these problems with us. They bring drugs. They bring crime. They are rapists. And some, I suppose, are good people. But I speak with border guards, and they tell us what we get. And that makes only common sense. It only makes good sense. They send us the wrong people.

The second is a recent rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, its first after the closure of COVID-19, stopping most of the presidential campaigns. Here is the relevant point from this:

Hey, it’s 1:00 in the morning and it’s very tough, I used the word sometimes, hombre, a very hombie breaks through the window of a young woman whose husband is absent as a salesman or whatever he does. And you call 911 and they say, “Sorry, this number is no longer working.” By the way, you have many such cases, many, many, many. Be it a young woman, an old woman, a young man or an old man, and you are sleeping.

Twitch tells TechCrunch that when launching the channel, he offered the Trump team the following guidance: “Like everyone else, Twitch policies must adhere to our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. “We make no exceptions for political or news content and will take actions with content that we are informed about that violates our rules.”

This news follows the recent ban on the massive subreddit The_Donald, which totaled more than 790,000 users, mainly dedicated to Trump content sharing. Reddit confirmed an update to its policy that led to the ban, along with 2,000 other sub-loans, including one dedicated to the hugely popular left-handed comedy podcast Chapo Trap House.

The company introduces the following new rules:

  • Rule 1 it explicitly states that communities and users who promote hatred based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.
    • There is an extended definition of what constitutes a violation of this rule, as well as specific examples in our Help Center Article,
  • Rule 2 associates our previous rules on prohibited behavior with a request to abide by the rules of the community and post with genuine, personal interest.
    • Debate and creativity are welcome, but spam and malicious attempts to intervene in other communities are not welcome.
  • Other rules are similar in spirit, but have been rewritten for clarity and inclusiveness.

All Reddit communities must conscientiously abide by our content policies. We banned r / The_Donald because he did not, despite all the possibilities. The community constantly posted and supported more content that violated the rules than the average (Rule 1), displeased us and other communities (Rules 2 and 8), and its mods refused to meet our most basic expectations. So far, we have been working diligently to help them keep the community as a space for their users — through alerts, mod changes, quarantine, and more.

Reddit adds that it has banned Chapo’s smaller board for a “permanent host”[ing] Content that violates the rules and its mods has not demonstrated intent to curb the community. ”

Trump, in particular, found himself waging war on social networking sites. After Twitter played hide and seek with problematic tweets related to postal voting and other issues, he signed an executive order aimed at Section 230 of the Decent Communication Act, which protects sites from prosecution for content posted by users.
